Williams Replaces Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto for the Italian Grand Prix
The decision comes after Sargeant’s underwhelming performance this season, marked by his recent crash during practice at the Dutch Grand Prix. Throughout the year, the 23-year-old American has struggled to break into the points, with an average finish between 16th and 17th place and two race retirements. Despite teammate Alexander Albon’s modest points tally of four, Williams has deemed Sargeant's results insufficient, leading to his departure midway through his second F1 season.
Williams' choice to promote Colapinto, currently competing in F2, reflects the team's focus on nurturing young talent. Colapinto has shown promise, sitting 6th in the F2 Championship, with notable performances including a win at Imola and podium finishes in Barcelona and Austria. His impressive showing during the first free practice session at Silverstone earlier this year also played a role in securing his spot.
Franco Colapinto will become the 49th driver to race for Williams Racing in an official F1 event, and the first Argentine driver in Formula 1 in 23 years. He will also be the second Argentine to race for the British team, following Carlos Reutemann's tenure in the early 1980s.
This decision underscores Williams' ambition to optimize their performance in the remaining races of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship. As the team continues to battle in a highly competitive midfield, they believe that Colapinto’s inclusion offers the best chance to secure valuable points.
James Vowles, Williams' team principal, emphasized the significance of this mid-season change: "Replacing a driver during the season is never easy, but we believe this gives Williams the best opportunity to compete effectively for the remainder of the year. We’ve made significant upgrades to the car, and we must capitalize on every chance to score points in a very tight midfield."
While Sargeant’s departure marks the end of an unproductive partnership, the team expressed their appreciation for his efforts: "Logan has worked tirelessly over the past two seasons and will remain a part of the Williams family. We’ll continue to support him as he pursues his driving career."
For Colapinto, this marks a significant milestone in his racing journey: "It’s an incredible honor to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams, a team with such a rich history. I’m fully committed to working hard alongside Alex and the team to ensure we maximize our potential in these final races."
As Williams gears up for the future with Carlos Sainz already secured for 2025, the remainder of the 2024 season will be a crucial period for Colapinto to prove his capabilities at the pinnacle of motorsport.
